Opening of the Guggenheim, Abu Dhabi, 2013

"Opening of the Guggenheim, Abu Dhabi, 2013"    Oil on canvas     41x51cm    2010

Ned and Burka Woman felt right at home at the Grand Opening of the Guggenheim in Abu Dhabi, 2013. Ned suspected that Canadian-American architect, Frank Gehry, had modelled the stunning museum design on the lines of his own unique armour. And Burka Woman really enjoyed showing off the Sidney Nolan works of Ned Kelly to her female UAE friends.

Burka Woman reminded her good friend that while the 2009 Janasse "Chaupin" Châteauneuf-du-Pape was indeed a magnificent and noble wine being served at the Grand Opening, it was worth keeping in mind that its alcoholic content of 15% could have quite an intensive effect after downing a few.

Introductions

Burka's sisters were very pleased to meet Ned at last. They had heard so much about him in Burka's letters, and trusted him as the right person to help them settle into a new way of life in Australia.
Having survived a brutal invasion of their home country by the West, and the perilous journeys by leaky boats from one country to the next, staying over six months at a time in numerous open refugee camps, the three sisters finally made it to the designated secret Northern Australian island beach.
The sisters clung to each other, weeping silent tears of joy, sorrow and relief, before being whisked away to a safer meeting place.... out of sight from those people who would have them locked up for their heroic desperate efforts to choose life over death, safety over living in terror....

Just Another Nude

Ned and Burka spent over a week checking out the new Guggenheim in Abu Dhabi on their world tour. They particularly liked this painting in the contemporary art section of the museum, and were pleased to find it receiving so much encouraging feedback from the global public audience.

One for the Road

Ned and Burka liked to have a beer in the local pub before riding out of town to their next adventure. Burka loved cocktails more than any other alcoholic beverage, but she did agree with Ned that there are times and places where only beer will do.

Mirror

Burka Woman was tired of being late all the time.
She couldn't understand why Ned would spend so much time in front of the bathroom mirror before going out at night. He was quite insecure, often asking Burka if he looked strong and handsome  in his armour. Such neediness was unsexy.
She decided at last to send him off into the desert, to sort his head out. It was very wise of her. Ned returned after six weeks, fearless and breezy, with restored confidence and zest for life. He and Burka built a new bath-house out of recycled timber and mudbrick, on the riverside lined with giant eucalypts and overlooking the calm water. Outdoor bath-houses are all the go for outlaws.

The Deal

Ned appears to be listening to Burka as she outlines the pros and cons for making an offer on the Waler mare at the Wandiligong horse fair. Ned, however, is experiencing difficulty concentrating on Burka's reasoning, as he has recently given up smoking and is outlining in his own head the pros and cons of having one little drag of Burka's fag.

Ned and Burka in the Pink Lake

Ned and Burka had many favourite spots in the Wimmera region of Victoria. One in particular was the Pink Lake just outside Dimboola. To paddle bare-footed in this lake at any hour is truly a bewitching experience... definitely not to be missed if travelling through Wotjobaluk country.

Sidelong Glance

Ned and Burka happened to sit next to each other at the Melbourne Fringe fashion show.
They checked each other out and liked what they saw.
They found their own fashions more exciting than those on the stage.

Sisters of the 7th Udder

The Sisters of the 7th Udder share a special Understanding of the Inner Mechanics of the Universe.
Golden Revelation No. 1 occurred in the Year of 1997, in the Fortunate Boat Studios of St Helier's Convent, Abbotsford, Melbourne and it concerned The Cow.
GR1 affirmed that if cows and more cows were allowed to roam throughout the City of Melbourne as they do in Indian cities, then the City of Melbourne would be a happier Place to Be. The People of Melbourne would be employed Most Usefully. Art would reign supreme.

It had long been a dream for Ned and Burka to check out the art of New York City. They eventually saved up enough cash from their church and bank raids to make the dream real. They especially enjoyed visiting the Guggenheim in Manhattan. Great waves of inspiration and unexpected emotion bubbled up from viewing such contemporary masterpieces. They vowed to make it to the Guggenheim in Abu Dhabi one day.
